Explore how to coach O-line blocking from the ground up, focusing on leveraging body position to create powerful blocks while keeping players' heads out of harm's way.

The video is an excerpt from Grand Valley State (MI) Head Coach Scott Wooster and his Glazier Drive presentation: Getting the Head out of the O-Line Block from the Ground Up: Leverage.

In all he has 4 Glazier Drive videos on Getting the Head Out of O-Line play.

Leverage Defined:   A balanced position of power

In all 3 planes of movement:

  • Front to Back (Vertical)
  • Frontal/Lateral (Horizontal)
  • Transverse (Rotational)

Goal of a Productive/Dominant Block

  • Break the defenders leverage.  Their position of power-in 1, 2, or all 3 planes.  Dominate by destroying their leverage.
  • By maintaining our leverage (Position of Power) in 3 planes.  Power from Posture.

Create Leverage and a Balanced Position of Power

  • "3-45s."  A 45 degree angle in the hip, in the knee, and in the ankle.
  • That creates shin angles to apply force equal and opposite for vertical movement.
  • 45 degrees is the angle to create optimal balance between power and movement.
  • Coordinates all joints for maximal power synergy--joint centration.
  • Creates optimal foot frequency to allow the blocker to move with optimal efficiency, rhythm, and pace.
  • Allows hips to surge.
