North Texas Punt Block Drills - Drew Svoboda

North Texas calls their punt retun unit "Punt Pressure."

They want put pressure on the punter and the entire punt unit every time the opponent is punting.

The video clip is a portion of North Texas' Associate Head Coach Svoboda's Punt Block Circuit presentation on Glazier Drive. You will see some chalk talk discussion, practice drill clips, and game footage of the application of the skills.

Notes from the presentation:

🏈 The three categories of blocks:

  1. Direct angle can be backside or frontside.
  2. Up and under if someone over sets.
  3. Single arm is usually internally

🏈They teach block the punt with your eyes, but smother it with your hands.

🏈To block a punt, slide your hands across the table.  Do not swat down at the football.

🏈At the point of the block, the hands are together in a diamond shape.

🏈Look at the ball when approaching the punter.  You have a facemask on, so there is no need to turn your head.

🏈Extend low hands, take the ball of the punter's foot, take a picture with your eyes,

🏈Don't leave your feet unless you have a free path.  If you're in the air you can't control your body.  That is when you are susceptible to a pentalty for running into the punter.
