Winning the battle for field position is never easy, but having a solid kick return always helps. In the video below, Donald Davis, Calvert Hall Prep High School Head Coach, discusses some of the foundations and expectations for their Man Scheme Middle Kickoff Return.
You can see his entire clinic on Glazier Drive.
Below the video are some of the key takeaways from his presentation
Coach Davis believes that your special teams should be a mix of starters, veteran players who are not starters, and young players looking for an opportunity to get playing time.
Special teams players should...
- Be coachable.
- Be able to operate under duress.
- Understand that what they do is important, but may not appear on the stat sheet.
- Be able to block and tackle in space.
- Specialists (kickers, long snappers, and punters) are as important as any position player. They need indy time as well as time to work with the rest of the special teams unit.
